Cap breached - what happens at draft?

By ColonelFailure

We've a coach in our league who by using the contract wizard on the whole team has ended up $40M over cap. What happens to his upcoming draft picks? Will players be auto-cut at some point? Beyond not being able to trade (at all, it seems) what else comes with being over-cap, and is cutting players the only way out of the pit?

Thanks.

Hmm. A precarious position.

My first recommendation is that he goes into his contract renegotiation wizard and play the 6-years contract game, work the sliders and see how much he can save per player with, of course, keeping in mind not extending out to obscene age years. (i.e. 33 year old WRs)

Whittle at it, initially, that way.

As far as trading and Houdini tricks out of it, I don't trade much and I believe a trade doesn't go through unless it puts him under the cap. (which, yeah, not happening :( )

....and to answer your question, at the Pre-season Game #1 stage the sim engine will take his highest base contract guys and cut them until the $40 mil over the cap is resolved.

:(

Oh and the draft picks, he can cut them 1 by 1 as they're selected. (computer doesn't do it)

That's really helpful, thanks Smirt.

If I understand right, the coach will still gain their draft selections (taking them further over cap) but providing they bring the team within cap by Preseason 1, all is well?

You're welcome and yes. :)

Preseason Game #1 is where the cap gets enforced.

You can also trade most of your draft picks for future picks if you're concerned about not being able to pay the current years' picks. Sometimes this ultimately is a great situation down the road as you could then package those multiple picks to move up in a future draft.

i had to do this recently when i started my third league.. the team had 51 signed players but zero cap room going into the draft.. traded out all picks and ran with current roster. It's not optimal but it will work for this season so i'll have more wiggle room next.

In your opinion, were you able to get "equal" value for your draft picks? Or did GMs realize you were in a bind and got "good" deals for your picks?

I got fleeced when I tried to do this, but just get the best deal you can. We've all been there, and some people are better about it than others. He will draft normally, and then still be over the cap after the draft. He can cut his draft picks without penalty by hitting the "Void Contract" button on the player card, but that goes away after training camp. Don't trade your draft picks after you pick people, because then you are still on the hook for the signing bonus no matter what.

Edited: Replaced "you" with "he" sometimes. I didn't realize you were talking about somebody else.

....and been there, done that with my very first team. Well, not exactly. Cut below 46 before end of season. Same result. It is brutal. Pretty much every player worth a slat will be removed, and new players will be signed at random to fill need, then at random to get to the 53 player max. I had 2 players over 80 rank, 6 b/w 70-79, 3 punters, yadda, yadda. Also, minimal salary cap space (<1m),, tons of dead cap in current season (220+m) and following season (212m), and likely for a season after.
It is brutal, dude should walkaway and find another team, imho - that is what I had to do. Good lesson to learn, tho :P
