As we start closing out the first half of the season, we have some teams that have substantiated themselves as major players for the inaugural league championship, other teams locking themselves in for a top 5 pick, while others are fighting just to keep their playoff hopes alive. Here is a look at how things look as we enter the halfway point of the season.
1. Arkansas 1101
The Razorbacks have been about as dominant as any other team in the league, and has held the top spot throughout the first 7 weeks of the season. After a 24-0 throttling of Iowa in week 7, they remain at P1 and will all but put a cap on the division race if they complete a sweep of divisional foes when they face #17 LSU in week 8.
2. Indiana 1086
Speaking of dominant teams, the Hoosiers have had an even easier time navigating their schedule thus far. Out scoring opponents 164-19 through week 7, they will look to go 8-0 when they go to Starkville to take on the Bulldogs. Indiana gave up their first TD of the season in their 27-7 romp of LSU and will take the field in week 8 looking for a GM as dangalanti retired for personal reasons
3. Michigan State 818
The Spartans remain undefeated in season 1 with a huge 24-7 win over Wisconsin in week 7. The win gave Michigan State a two game lead for the division title and sets them up for a nice playoff position going into the second half of the season. Closing the first half out with a win against #30 Nebraska should give the Spartans plenty of confidence for the second half.
4. Washington 643
Sitting at 5-2 might not have been what #4 Washington was hoping for going to the season halftime, with wins over ranked teams Alabama and Florida (last week), gives the Huskies the confidence they need to close out the season. The two losses came at the hands of #3 Michigan State and #17 LSU, so there is still some work to do on the field for the Huskies.
5. Texas 603
The Longhorns entered the top 5 for the first time this season. Sitting at 6-1, they are tied for the SEC West division lead with the Sooners, however, a week 1 loss to those Sooners has Texas 1/2 game back. A 34-10 smoking at Missouri in week 7 propelled Texas into the top 5, along with some help. The Longhorns are hoping to move up another spot, or at least take sole possession of the division after they take the field against #16 Texas A&M this week.
6. Oklahoma 561
Oklahoma has played well enough to stay in the top ten in the first 7 weeks, and sit with a microscopic 1/2 game lead over rival Texas in the division. The Sooner defense has been a key factor in the 6-1 record with the loss coming at Mississippi State due to a State defensive TD. Since that week 4 set back, Oklahoma has reeled off 3 straight wins including blowout shutouts the past two weeks. The Sooners will look to make it three when they go to Ohio State and face the #18 Buckeyes.
7. Alabama 390
After a week 1 set back, Alabama reeled off 4 straight wins before losing the last two weeks to Washington and in state rival Auburn. A test against #25 Tennessee should set the course right again for the Tide for the second half of the season. If they get upset to fall to .500 in week 8, not only could Alabama fall out of the top ten, but they could see themselves in a 3 way tie for the division lead.
8. Mississippi State 296
After a week of sitting outside the top ten last week, the Bulldogs re entered the rankings and look to remain there for the second half. A win over arch rival Ole Miss last week has put State in a position to improve upon their playoff positioning after week 8. A visiit by #2 Indiana looms in week 8 and could send State back outside the rankings if they can't find any consistency.
9. Florida 139
The Gators are sitting 3-4 after 7 weeks but thanks to all but one loss being against ranked opponents (a 24-16 setback against #12 Vandy in week 6) indicating the tough schedule the reason for their losing record, the pollsters are keeping Florida in the top ten. The Gators will have the chance to reach .500 and prove the polls right when #13 UCLA takes the cross country trip from LA to Gainesville.
10. Missouri 96
After gaining momentum and moving up to #9 in the polls in week 6, a week 7 home loss to Texas has seen Missouri fall back into the gate keeper role. They will look to at least keep that role, when they travel to face #27 Penn State at the halfway game. A win will keep the Tigers in position to fight for a playoff spot, while a loss will hurt those chances as well have Missouri looking outside the top ten.
