The Longhorns secured a 34-13 victory over the Buckeyes in their 2037 preseason week 2 matchup on August 22. The game, played at the Buckeyes' home field, featured a strong offensive showing from the Longhorns under head coach Edward Bolin.
Texas struck early in the first quarter with a 1-yard rushing touchdown by running back Timothy Vance at 9:01, putting the Longhorns up 7-0 after the extra point by Richard Brown. The Buckeyes responded with a 49-yard field goal by Adalberto Cuddy to cut the Longhorns' lead to 7-3.
Vance contributed significantly early but also had a fumble recovered by the Buckeyes late in the first quarter. However, the Buckeyes were limited offensively, with quarterback Oscar Humphrey throwing an 87-yard touchdown pass to Edwin Molina in the second quarter to briefly take a 10-7 lead following Cuddy’s extra point.
The Longhorns regained momentum with a 48-yard field goal from Richard Brown and a late second-quarter touchdown pass from quarterback Kirk Rose to Bryan Roberts, who broke free on a 68-yard reception. This extended Texas' halftime lead to 17-13.
Throughout the game, the Longhorns' offense was balanced, combining 395 passing yards and 162 rushing yards. Rose passed for 203 yards and one touchdown, while Joe Mathena added 192 passing yards and two touchdowns. Vance added 55 rushing yards and a receiving touchdown.
The Buckeyes struggled to capitalize beyond their early second-quarter scores, with limited rushing production of only 6 yards on 24 carries. Despite a notable 97 receiving yards from Edwin Molina and 74 from Chris Ryant, the offense could not break through the Longhorns’ defense that recorded three sacks and one interception.
Texas’ defense forced three fumble recoveries, helping to stifle the Buckeyes' drives. The Longhorns' kicking unit was perfect on two field goal attempts, contributing crucial points.
No third-down conversions were recorded by either team, and penalties were minimal with the Longhorns committing four for 35 yards and the Buckeyes one for 5 yards.
Coach Edward Bolin’s squad demonstrated effective offensive execution and solid defensive play, limiting the Buckeyes to just 13 points.
The game concluded with the Longhorns maintaining control in the second half, including a long punt deep into Buckeyes territory by Timothy White.
Longhorns wide receivers Juan Peterson, Bryan Roberts, and James Garrett each recorded touchdown runs and solid yardage, supporting the balanced attack.
This win adds confidence to the Longhorns’ preseason as they prepare for the upcoming regular season.
