The Longhorns made Week 2 a lesson in complementary football: Kirk Rose and the passing game struck early, the defense repeatedly took the ball away, and Richard Brown finished every field-goal chance. The result was a 46-3 win over the Commodores on Sept. 12, with Austin’s side moving to 2-0.
Rose opened the scoring with a 49-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Roberts with 10:26 remaining in the first quarter. After the defense forced a stop, Rose found James Garrett for a two-yard score, and Brown’s 53-yard field goal made it 17-0 before the quarter ended. That sequence showed the Longhorns’ balance in execution: they could create an explosive gain through the air, then finish a short-field opportunity near the goal line.
The defensive structure made the gap wider. Ralph Batiste intercepted Keith Molina late in the first quarter, and David Bass added another pick in the second. Batiste struck again before halftime and once more in the final minute, accounting for three of the Longhorns’ four interceptions. The Commodores completed 21 of 38 passes for 154 yards, but the turnovers and a 2-for-12 conversion rate on third down repeatedly cut off their chances to sustain drives.
Meanwhile, Bolin’s offense kept converting possessions into points. Blake Jones punched in a one-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Rose then connected with tight end James Holdsworth for a four-yard score, pushing the lead to 31-0. Brown added a 45-yard field goal before the break, and the Longhorns carried a 34-0 advantage into halftime.
The scoring slowed after the break, but the control did not. Brown’s 33-yard field goal in the third quarter extended the lead to 37-0. In the fourth, Rose found George Hastings for a nine-yard touchdown; Hastings finished with 95 receiving yards and a score. The Commodores’ only points came on Troy Ayers’ 46-yard field goal, after an earlier 50-yard attempt went wide left. Brown then capped a perfect 4-for-4 day with a 39-yarder for the final margin.
Rose threw for 311 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, while the Longhorns added 138 yards on 31 carries. Their five red-zone visits produced four touchdowns. The cleanest tactical edge, though, was the turnover margin: four interceptions, none thrown by Rose. The Longhorns are 2-0, with 75 points scored and 13 allowed through two weeks.
